The difference between a good web site and a bad
site is obvious, but how can we tell? Are YOUR sites
in the bad category?
Here I offer some pointers, so that the experienced
ones out there can refresh their memories, and the
newbies out there won't suffer a painful learning
curve.

1. The difference between good and bad
======================================================
The main things that set a good site above a bad site,
from both the visitor's perspective, and the designer's,
are layout, content, and how search engine friendly
your site is.
A good clear layout is vital. Don't make your site too
busy - it should be immediately obvious what your
site's name is, and what it's about.
When you lay out text, don't make it scroll right across
the screen. Put it in a table of about 500 to 600
pixels wide, so that each line breaks at about sixty
characters.
It's rude to make your visitors strain their eyes to
read long lines or force them to resize their browser
to prevent it. Please don't.
Color is important too. Be consistent. Reading from a
computer screen is painful, so make it as easy to read
as possible. Black on white or near white is the
easiest to read.
Text is the cornerstone of your web site. You need a
substantial amount of content to feed to the search
engines, to the directories, and to your visitors -
that is if you want them to come back!
It is also extremely unlikely that the big directories,
especially Yahoo, will list you unless you have a
substantial amount of content...

2.How to write search engine friendly content
======================================================
When it comes to actually writing your content, you
should craft it from a search engine perspective.
Search engines are where most of your new visitors will
come from, so it's vital you take them into account
when you design your site.
Write your text separately from your HTML, and then
once it's complete, add HTML, and turn it into a web
page.
It'll save you a lot of time, as you won't be tempted
to fiddle with the design all the time.
When you come to write a page, you need to figure out
what you want to say, research it, plan it, and then
write it.
Part of your research should include finding
appropriate keywords to optimize your page for. Use a
tool such as Overture's Search Term Suggestion Tool to
find popular key phrases to target.
Overture's Search Term Suggestion Tool:

Select two, maybe three keywords for your page to focus
on, and write your page using them frequently.
Put them in the title, headings, and throughout the
main body of your content.
You should select other keywords for the other pages in
your site. That way you'll have a number of different
pages with different content coming up under different
key phrases in the search engines.
When writing a keyword focused page, don't use the
keyword too much, as it will seem unnatural to the
human eye. A delicate balance must be struck between
search engine friendly, and human friendly text.
Make your content useful, as that's what will attract
more return visitors. Endless hype and a thousand
exclamation marks will not make your visitor trust you,
and won't put them into a mood to buy.
When you offer useful, genuine advice, your visitors
are much more likely to trust you when you make your
personal recommendation of a product, and more likely
to buy from you, and in the end, earn you that
commission.
