1. How to increase newsletter subscriptions - free
==================================================
A month ago I installed a once-only pop-under promoting my newsletter
and the results have been superb.
Before you run away screaming how I'm an evil spammer, hear me out. My
pop-under solves a lot of the problems that plague them, and I am sharing
it with you free.
Pop-ups are great when used to promote something USEFUL, like your
USEFUL newsletter, or your USEFUL free eBook.
They have many limitations, and I think they'll soon go the way of banner
ads, so now is the time to use them while they're still effective.
The problems pop-ups have are:
- They often pop-up before the rest of a page has started loading
making them the first thing people see. This can leave a bad
impression, and unless it's a killer pop-up, it may get closed before it's
even finished loading.
- Repeat visitors get sick of being hit by them over and over again
(for example if it's on your home page).
- Most pop-up scripts go in the <HEAD> of a page, and may affect its
search engine ranking (because it pushes the keyword rich copy down).
Most also load as soon as your page starts to load, which can slow
down the loading of your entire page.
I created a JavaScript to fix these problems - and I'm giving it away free.
My JavaScript:
- Is a pop-under instead of pop-up - the popped page appears beneath
the browser window instead of above, so they don't intrude on the
visitor as much, and they are more likely to load before being closed.
- Will only pop-up once and will not hound repeat visitors (uses cookies).
- Goes in the <BODY> rather than the <HEAD> so that it can be
anywhere in the page, won't ruin a good search engine ranking,
and you can chose WHEN it loads.
I usually put it near the middle-end of the <BODY>, so that it will
start loading after the main content of the page has begun to display.
I made a generator for it, so all you have to do is enter the URL
you want to pop-under, and hit generate, and it will produce the code,
no strings attached.

2.How to write a killer Pop-under
=================================
Many people (myself included) often close pop-ups with barely a glance at
them, so how can you make sure yours is noticed?
- Make it small, compact, and powerful. All the standard rules for
writing online copy apply, but doubly so. Don't be afraid to rewrite
it over and over again. Every word needs to help build on the previous
benefits.
- Give it a killer headline - I mean an absolutely ruthless headline. A
lot of sites use pop-ups to promote their newsletters, so yours has to
stand out.
I don't know how many times I go to marketing sites and a pop-up
begins to load with the headline "Subscribe to my free newsletter!".
It may be a call to action, but it shows no benefits to the visitor.
Call to actions go at the END of copy (text), NOT at the beginning.
- Give it a killer file name. This is important, and often overlooked!
When a pop-up loads, for the split second it takes your browser to
download enough info to learn the pop-up's <TITLE>, it will display
the file name.
Often that's simply "popup.html". There is no simpler way to show
your visitors you're pitching something at them.
But if the file name was something benefit laden like
"free-super-affiliate-tips.html", it may make your visitor stop to
think long enough for your headline to load, and work its magic.
You also should make sure your script pops under, and that it uses
cookies so that it pops only once.

3. Why you can't trust cookies
==============================
I came back from my holiday two weeks ago, and sat down
at my computer to work. The first thing I did was have a look at
http://LifetimeCommissions.com to see what could be improved.
What greeted me? My cookie based once-only pop-under promoting
my newsletter.
My browser had decided to delete my cookie, and so my pop-under
popped.
The moral of the story? Don't trust a merchant who says their
affiliate program, which is tracked solely by cookies, will pay
lifetime commissions.
Cookies won't last as long as the merchants say they will. They're
tricking you out of commissions.
Look for merchants that treat you as a true partner, one that
understands affiliate marketing and technology - one that has
some sort of database back end to their tracking.
If you're one of those merchants who relies on cookies, talk to your
programmers/Webmaster, or see my article (recently updated
and condensed) "How to create a lifetime commissions affiliate program"

4. Lifetime affiliate programs added in December/January
========================================================
December was a quiet month, so I have included the additions from
early January in this issue too.

In December one of the best selling affiliate programs out there
switched to lifetime commissions - Yanik Silver's Surefire Marketing.
Besides top selling products, Yanik also offers a great free
newsletter "Surefire Marketing Secrets E-zine".
It comes with my highest recommendations.
It's more focused towards how to write selling copy than affiliate's
pre-selling techniques, but it's still a invaluable resource for web-
writing.
