1. How to create effective banner ads
================================
Banner ads seem to be on the way out. Originally you could get a 5% to
10% click through rate, but now they're lucky if they get 0.5%...
Well, that's not entirely true. Only the bad ones get such a low CTR -
I've made one that got a CTR of 4.5%, and now, two weeks on, it's
getting 2.72%.
How did I do it? The secret is to think about the way people react to
banners.
When was the last time you clicked on a banner? You probably have at
some stage, but how long ago was that? When was the last time you even
noticed one?
Traditional banners don't work because they look like banners, and
people simply ignore them. So, what's the secret to a banner that
works? Not making it look like a banner!
My banner has no border, its background color is the same as the page
background, and it's all text, no images. In fact, it looks a lot like
a normal text recommendation - it looks like a part of the web site.
In fact, that's the main reason it succeeds - because it looks like it
belongs there, like it's an extra paragraph that the site owner made
and put there as extra content, like it's something worth reading.
It's made entirely with HTML, and has no images, though you could save
it as an image if you really wanted to...
I recommend you stick to HTML banners, as they load faster, and are
easy to make.
All basic copywriting techniques apply for making HTML banners - use
a colorful attention grabbing "headline", pack it full of benefits, and
hone it like a samurai sword to cut straight to the point.
Focus on the text, on filling it with benefits, and on not making it
look like the traditional banners that people ignore.

Where did I learn to make banners like that? Is there more? You bet. I
learned from Scott Covert, who has sold millions on the Internet with
his banner ads.
Scott's book "Banner Ad Magic" is jam packed with more banner creation
techniques, plus easy to use methods to get banner placement at much
lower rates than usually possible.

3. How to find cool stuff on Google
=============================
Google's running a programming contest, and an idea a friend and I had
for it was a "find related content" option, but I discovered it
already exists.
If you find a cool site, just search in Google for "related:______"
where ______ is the URL of the site, and some useful stuff is bound to
crop up!
For example, if you want to find sites related to http://jimworld.com
do a search in Google for "related:http://jimworld.com".
