If you've ever been annoyed at the length of the affiliate URLs that some merchants give you, here's a simple solution to your problem.

You can replace long URLs with fast, short, server-side redirects, so that people won't feel "pitched" and won't be turned off by links that are obviously affiliate links.

To set up a redirect, edit the file called ".htaccess", in the main directory of your web site - but make sure you take a backup of this file before you start editing it!

The basic format for a redirect is:

Redirect /redirect-url http://www.merchantdomain.com/link.html

For example, to create a redirect at the url:

http://LifetimeCommissions.com/corey

... To point to the URL:

http://www.marketingtips.com/t.cgi/7134

I put this line in my .htaccess file:

Redirect /corey http://www.marketingtips.com/t.cgi/7134

Try it and see, it works:

http://LifetimeCommissions.com/corey

You also should have a redirect for any 404 (page not found) errors, so that if anyone puts a bad URL into your web site, they're sent to a friendly page pointing them in the right direction.

To do that, put this in your .htaccess file:

ErrorDocument 404 /404.html

On the page 404.html, you have the page you want displayed when people try to access a bad URL.

On this page you'd have stuff like advice on how to get around your site, links to popular areas, and maybe even push a popular product.
